The YMCA in Markham

Markham YMCA Rudy Bratty Centre

May 1, 2008 – Markham is a rapidly growing town! In recent years, many newcomers to Canada have chosen to settle with their families here. A number of years ago, the Town of Markham approached the YMCA of Greater Toronto with the prospect of locating a full-service Health, Fitness and Recreation Centre in the Town.

The YMCA's values of inclusion, respect, and community-building were well aligned with the goal to provide a place for all members of the community: to feel welcome, to engage in programs that would promote a healthy and active lifestyle, and to place a focus on the entire family. So work began to build the Markham YMCA Rudy Bratty Centre. Read More >>

Underneath that face of sweet shyness lies the funniest little girl I have ever known!

May 6, 2008 – This is a collection of Little Girl Quips that my oldest daughter and I have collected over the last year. We are certain that my youngest will turn to comedy once she overcomes her girlhood shyness!

Pillows in the Hallway
"I know what those are!" my little monkey exclaimed with excitement, pointing to the pillars in the front hallway. "They are PILLOWS, only they are hard ones." Read More >>

The Kiss

MORE POEMS BY PIRA EBRAHIMI

I dreamed of your kiss...
want to know more?

“Sure.”

It was soft yet powerful, moist yet powdery, kind yet passionate...
want to know more?

“Sure.”

I woke up... feeling... good, lively and charged... want to know more?

“Sure.”

Fin... want to know more?

“Sure.”

That’s it. The feelings are in the past... life goes on.

Dating After Many Years
BY PIRA EBRAHIMI >>

May 1, 2008 – “No one deserves to be alone!” That's something I read in a Grade 8 novel. It sat with me for a long time and seemed very true.

Years passed and one day I stopped being that stubborn workaholic and decided to start scanning the one billion males out there to find something meaningful.

But time had passed and I, returning to the dating scene after many years, had a lot of questions. I asked, "What are the rules? What should and shouldn't I say or do? When would you know that you are going to be exclusive with someone? When can you become physically intimate – is it until you figure the person out (but how can you really figure someone out)? Is it necessary in a relationship to figure one another out?"

Having no answers then I suggest some alternatives now from what I have learned: why don’t we endorse a pleasant companionship and avoid being unrealistically picky? "But what if the person is not perfect?" you might ask. Well... if you are enjoying the companionship then just pull yourself together and live with what you find less than perfect in your new friend!

Organizing Life
READ MORE FROM SHERI GAMMON DEWLING >>

May 1, 2008 – This month’s article is a departure from my traditional practical advice on home organization. This article provides subjective statements, designed to provoke your own thought and judgment, examining; the best balance for you between work and fun; responsibility and vice, and what we should do vs. what we want or need. ‘Organizing life’ is a monumental title that deserves direct and honest opinion. Here is mine. Read More >>

Flush by Carl Hiaasen

April 30, 2008 – Are you a sucker for the environment? If you are, you will enjoy this book because it is about a family that tries to stop the ocean from becoming polluted. Flush by Carl Hiaasen, an award-winning author (Hoot, 2004), is an adventure that you will dive into.

Imagine a father who finds himself in jail for different charges time and time again... and then read about how his two children, Abbey and Noah, do everything in their power to prove his innocence! That is a must, right, as part of the plot? Wait a second, why am I asking you? I already know the ending! Read More >>

Sponsor Pedal for Preemies
MORE FROM MONIKA JAZYK >>

May 1, 2008 – On January 26, 2006, my precious baby boy, Andrius Jazyk, came into this world at only 26 weeks gestation. Thanks to the suberb medical facilities and staff at Mount Sinai's NICU, my special little guy survived this tremendous ordeal and has blossomed into the mischevious two-year-old he is today.

On May 31st 2008, I will be walking 5 km for Andrius in the Pedal for Preemies bike/walk/run-a-thon hosted by The Linden Fund. I am seeking sponsorship for this event to help The Linden Fund raise money to help support Ontario NICU's.

The goal for Team Andrius is to raise $3000, representing my three lost pregnancy months. If you could support our team with a monetary donation of any amount, we would be much appreciative. Alternately, if you would like to walk with us, please join our team!

Your donation will be a small step towards making a difference. Read More >>

Perfect Parents Don't Exist: Go Maple Leafs

April 15, 2008I’m not sure when it happened. When did my sweet little boy turn into a ‘guy’?

At almost 5 now, Jack has found hockey, and it is the light of his life. Being raised in an all-girl house, I’ve never understood the sport, although my grandfather tried desperately to teach it to one of his 3 granddaughters – nothing stuck. Read More >>
