Commitment to Cornell businesses, then and now
March 10, 2007 – We have said this before but every now and again, we remind ourselves that it's a good thing to put it out there, to refresh our biggest purpose behind SayItCornell.com – business. As individuals with our own successful businesses, we understand the level of dedication that each start-up business in Cornell must have to sustain a living. The Cornell Business Directory went live in 2005, and through the network that we have been building with referrals and carefully planned events (Cornell Easter Egg Hunt & Fair and the Annual Garden Festival), positive connections have materialized.
"I just got an email from someone on Gowland that was checking out info about the Easter Egg Hunt and saw my name and wants a quote. Thanks for getting me in there so quickly."
John Riley,
President
Rileys' Window Cleaning

Hasty Market "The Cornell Stop" is officially open!
December 28, 2006 – SayItCornell.com arrived at 10am on Thursday, December 28, 2006 to observe Om Jai Jagdish, a Hindu prayer to Ganesha who is the remover of obstacles before the beginning of any new venture whether it is the building of a new house, the writing of a book, the beginning of a journey or the starting of a new business. Hasty Market has officially opened their new doors!
"I came here at 6:30 this morning to do the coffee. First time I woke up so early!" Kenny proudly exclaimed, grinning from ear to ear. And the coffee was delicious! We sat at a table and watched as pedestrians poured in to wish Kenny and Arun good luck! There are freezers/fridges that line two entire walls, several aisles for goodies, two walls for new release DVD's, a coffee corner with tables, and many other everyday conveniences.
We are rather impressed with the atmosphere and level of professional presentation. The best part is that it's not yet finished! More details will be implemented in the coming weeks so pop in and welcome this new change at The Mews! There is a Sale on at "The Cornell Stop" after all! Sale begins December 28, 2006 at 96 Cornell Park Ave and ends January 15, 2007 or until quantities last!

SayItCornell.com’s COMMITMENT to Businesses in Cornell
July 8, 2006 – For over a year, we have researched and supported a variety of Cornell businesses. We have worked with large corporations, small home-based businesses, and the Cornell builders to raise the business profile in our community and the surrounding areas of Markham. We are committed to our SayItCornell.com business directory and strive to bring to you as many opportunities as we are able to.

and The Magic of Danny Hamill performs for a young audience during Cornell's 2nd Annual Garden Festival (right)
Great examples of our commitment is by founding the Garden Festival Committee and by chairing Cornell’s first-ever street celebration, the Cornell 2nd Annual Garden Festival. Planning, marketing, and getting to know over sixty businesses for this single event has proven to be our greatest achievement to date. We were proud to have been able to showcase countless companies, big and small! With great community effort, we were able to successfully incorporate Cornell’s largest-ever Art Gallery into the fold as well.
The inaugural Garden Festival in 2005 started as a modest event in The Mews Park, during which we launched Thirst-For-Books, our independent fundraiser for Cornell Village Public School's (CVPS) library. This awareness program has young students from CVPS volunteer time to promote and sell lemonade-by-donation and t-shirts to raise funds for new library books. Thirst-For-Books has successfully been able to encourage viable businesses province-wide to contribute towards our community's literacy needs. It has become the definition of sustaining a community through the strength of honest relationships.
Dominique and Jennifer Allard of Royal LePage were Platinum sponsors for Cornell's 2nd Annual EEH (left) and Shoppers Drug Mart, co-founder of Cornell's EEH, sponsored the prizes, chocolates, and eggs for the event in 2006 (right)
Last April, we were able to bring the Cornell 2nd Annual Easter Egg Hunt (EEH) and Colouring Contest to fruition, taking the place of Mattamy Homes for planning and marketing (whereas in the previous year, we were liaison between the residents of Cornell and the EEH event hosts). With over 1,000 invited guests in 2006 and another opportunity for local businesses to market themselves through sponsorship, EEH became one of the most highly-anticipated events in not only Cornell, but Markham as well!
Of course, we never forget all the hard work that is contributed by everyone. We design and upload permanent and professional mini albums on SayItCornell.com’s Mini Albums and Photo Archives page, detailing the businesses, sponsors, and volunteers of every one of our projects. These popular album keepsakes provide constant marketing for those businesses who were (financially) involved with our events. The albums are currently free downloads to all of our online guests.
Okay, now that you are finished, DISCOVER CORNELL!

INTRODUCTION:
Business in Markham's New Urbanism Cornell
August 2005 – Struck by the architectural beauty and friendliness of Cornell, it is easy
to forget that we are on the edge of a growing town, one
of the quickest in the province of Ontario. But what makes Markham's
Cornell so special? The New Urbanism.
According to Andres Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk,
two of the founders of the Congress for The New Urbanism,
an authentic neighborhood contains most of the thirteen
Principles of the New Urbanism. For the sake of the Business Directory's introduction, some of the key elements relative to business are as follows:
|
|
| |
1. |
Most of the dwellings are within a five-minute walk of
the center, an average of roughly 2,000 feet. |
|
| |
2. |
There are a variety of dwelling types — usually houses,
row houses and apartments — so that younger and older people, singles and families, the poor and the wealthy may
find places to live. |
|
| |
3. |
At the edge of the neighborhood, there are shops and
offices of sufficiently varied types to supply the weekly needs of a household. |
|
| |
4. |
Streets within the entire neighborhood form a connected
network, which disperses traffic by providing a variety of
pedestrian and vehicular routes to any destination. |
|
| |
5. |
The streets are relatively narrow and shaded by rows of
trees. This slows traffic, creating an environment suitable for pedestrians and bicycles.
|
|
| |
We’ll take point number 3 and expand it. What happens when a variety of services and products are available based out of a resident’s home? What if your neighbour taught art classes, yoga and fitness, or guitar lessons, all the while providing an opportunity to eliminate that extra trip in the car? There aren’t too many company signs sitting on front lawns to inform us, so SayItCornell.com developed this online business directory as a service to the community of Cornell. Perhaps as it grows, you may be able to embrace and fully sustain a healthier pedestrian lifestyle. If you would like to submit your business to this directory, email us for more information at business@sayitcornell.com. Please allow 24hrs for response from one of our representatives.
So what are you waiting for? Discover Cornell!
