Little Rouge to hold Grand Cornell students
Adapted from the CVPS Newsletter
March 1, 2007 – With the Ministry's implimentation of the 'hard cap' for all Primary classes next school year (JK-G3) and the continuing growth of the Cornell community, it is going to be necessary to reduce the expected school population of Cornell Village Public School by an additional 75 students in order to appropriately accommodate the students (approximately 40 will also be graduating).
It has been decided that the students who reside in Grand Cornell will attend Little Rouge Public School beginning September 4, 2007. There are no plans to build a new school in the Grand Cornell Community in the near future. Fortunately, Little Rouge PS will be opening with a smaller population of students and will have ample room within its building to accommodate the Grand Cornell students for the foreseeable future. Bus transportation will continue. |

2nd Term Report Cards may be delayed
Adapted from the CVPS Newsletter
March 1, 2007 – Reports will go home with students hopefully between March 7 and March 8, 2007. The school is experiencing delays due to two types of sickness – the stomach flu and a respiratory illness that has led to a type of pneumonia in two staff members. As a result, some teachers are behind in their report card writing. The school will make every effort to have all Report Cards ready to go home before the March Break. If an exception needs to be made, parents will receive a letter to inform them of the situation and the alternate date of distribution.
Arrangements can be made for Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences for the week of Marchh 19th. If you would like to have a Conference, CVPS asks that you note the request on the return slip which is on page three of your child(ren)'s report card.

Winter is here
Adapted from the CVPS Newsletter
As Winter has finally arrived, it is important to remember and prepare for several weather conditions:
Winter clothing should be prepared in advance so that students will be ready.
Boots and indoor shoes are also needed to keep feet dry and comfortable. All students must have indoor shoes to use in the school building. Velcro shoes are recommended for younger students who cannot tie their own shoelaces.
When stormy days occur, it is important to understand that it is your safety decision to send your child to school. The schools are open on stormy days, however the busses may not run and the school may have some staff absences as a result of travel conditions. If you choose to drop your child off at school on these days, remember that it is your responsibility to pick them up at 3:30pm. More information is outlined in your child's Agenda Planner, including the radio stations to monitor on stormy days.

CVPS Growth and Provincial Primary Class Size Cap
Adapted from the CVPS Newsletter
February 16, 2007 – With the Ministry's implimentation of the 'hard cap' for all Primary classes next school year (JK-G3) and the continuing growth of the Cornell community, it is going to be necessary to reduce the expected school population of Cornell Village Public School by an additional 75 students in order to appropriately accommodate the students (approximately 40 will also be graduating). These students will need to overflow to Little Rouge Public School for September 2007. Principal John Hopkins is currently working with the CEC East Superintendent of Schools, Ruth Lambert, and the YRDSB Accommodation Planner on possible scenarios to determine the approach and details for the required 'overflow' procedure. Fortunately, Little Rouge PS will be opening with a smaller population of students and will have ample room within its building to accommodate these students for the foreseeable future.
More detailed information will be forthcoming as soon as the overflow approach has been determined. Please look forward to additional information in the near future. |

 Kindergarten Placement
Adapted from the CVPS Newsletter
January 16, 2006 – There are two types of Kindergarden Programs: Full Day/Alternate Day and Half Day/Every Day. If you are interested in the Half Day/Every Day program, you must be prepared to take either morning or afternoon. If you must have only morning or only afternoon, the school advises that you request for Full Day/Alternate Day instead.
The school will begin to organize the September classes in May. You will receive your final class placement in the mail, along with the information about your Kindergarten Orientation Evening (usually late May). |

Volunteers who collected the donations through the Thirst-For-Books lemonade stand at three events during the summer were Joanne Andrianopoulos, Maria, Mark, Emily and Eva Escandon,
Siobhan and Sheila Wilson, Liam Mohan, Neil and Ella Kohlman, and Kayla Torrington. 'Justine's Fun Faces' stepped up and joined Thirst-For-Books to raise $122 out of the total sum. Here's to happy reading at the CVPS Library!

Reminder: Obey the Crosswalk at CVPS
Adapted from the CVPS Newsletter
Kim Underhill is the school's Crossing Guard. It is imperative that all parents and students cross Country Glen Road and Donald Sim/Cornell Commons at the crosswalk.
Besides supporting community safety, it is important to understand that the Town of Markham may withdraw the Crossing Guard if their parking officers witness parents/students ignoring the Crossing Guard. |

Little Rouge Public School
July 4, 2006 – Upper Cornell’s elementary school is scheduled to open in September 2007. The school’s name, Little Rouge PS, was chosen. In the public release, York Region District School Board described their decision as: “Despite its name, Little Rouge Creek is anything but small. It is the second longest watercourse in the over 250 kilometer-long Rouge River system which is home to Rouge Park, the largest urban park in North America. Rising in the Oak Ridges Moraine in Whitchurch-Stouffville, the Little Rouge winds its way south through a small rural landscape of forests, wetlands, farms and old fields, into the Park in eastern Markham, before joining the Rouge River just north of Highway 401 in Toronto.”

Auction Bid Brought a Great Evening of Fun and Sport
June 22, 2006 – During the CVPS Advisory Council fundraising auction on May 7, 2006, Samantha Demel and
her neighbours and friends, collaborated on the bid of the year. Of their estimated $550 bid, she said, "The winning bid
for Mr. Lynch was 500. After, we all kept throwing money in – I think it was closer to 550. We didn't care that it went
over as it all goes to the school. We had about seven moms and some students with their pocket money vying for this
prize. We are so glad we could win it for our kids. It was quite the joint effort with the other moms. We couldn't help
but let out a loud cheer and jump up and down!" For the Cornell Family Fun Day Scavenger Hunt auction, Mr. Lynch
had volunteered to referee any game for up to 30 kids for three hours in the school gym – and the game was realized on
June 22. "The kids had a blast and played their hearts out. It is going to be a shame to have such an amazing teacher leave us." After three years at CVPS, Mr. Lynch has taken a position to help open the Legacy Public School, west of 9th Line
and south of the ETR407. "It was worth bidding for. What a night! What a game!!"

CVPS day-time fundraiser a lot of fun!
May 7, 2006 – Every year the CVPS Advisory Council plans and executes a large scale fundraising event. This year was no different and it was a lot of fun! Literally, set in the Cornell community area within a 3-kilometre stretch, guests who bought their tickets for merely $5 each were asked to follow a list of clues for points in the Cornell Family Fun Day Scavenger Hunt. There were two age-appropriate hunts – one for the juniors and one for families – each with a copy of SayItCornell.com’s Map of Cornell. We took the family route, stopped for some java and snacks at Coffee&Co., and off we went to find “The Victorian Lady” on Bur Oak Avenue, to find the boot on Settlement Park, and to count how many hoops exist in “Basketball Lane”!
We didn’t finish,... didn’t expect to with toddlers in tow, but we certainly had fun and had worked up a good appetite. At two o’clock, we re-entered the school for our hot dogs and juice refreshments (included with each ticket purchase). We walked through the hallways to see tables set up for face painting and tattoos, and classrooms were open for craft activities too! In the gymnasium, a Live and Silent Auction were well underway. We enjoyed the crowd’s roar when Mr. Lynch’s package was won by Samantha Demel and friends, the highest bidders with an estimated $550. She says, “The winning bid for Mr. Lynch was 500. After, we all kept throwing money in – I think it was closer to 550. We didn't care that it went over as it all goes to the school. We had about seven moms and some students with their pocket money vying for this prize. We are so glad we could win it for our kids. It was quite the joint effort with the other moms. We couldn't help but let out a loud cheer and jump up and down!” For auction, Mr. Lynch had volunteered to referee any game for up to 30 kids for three hours in the school gym – now, that’s something to remember for a long time! Other auction items included hand-painted chairs, artwork, quilts, pillows, dental certificates, videos, books, sports tickets, and much more!
Thank you to the sponsors that helped to make this happen: Timber Creek Golf; Cornell Village Child Care; Lynda and Paul Wray, Century 21 Leading Edge Realty, and; Louie DeBartolo, Remax Classic Properties Inc. Thank you to the Auction and Silent Auction donors and to the tireless volunteers for donating your time to make this event a huge success. A very special thanks to CVPSAC, the organizers behind this event – you did a fantastic job! The raised funds have so far reached an estimated total of $10,000. Nobody could say the event wasn't what it set out to do – to raise money for much-needed school initiatives – and it was an exceptional and fun afternoon as well. We really look forward to your next fundraising event next year!
