Twenty-eight teens from six high schools in Markham have collaborated to design and build their own exhibit on the subject of Rwanda. The inspiration for this exhibit was a pen-pal project that happened through the 1980’s at Unionville Public School. These letters form the core of the exhibit, and were the starting point of the year-long journey taken by our youth curators into understanding a culture with ties to Markham. Join us in celebrating the opening of this exciting exhibit.

Five stages of entertainment bring you the best of local and regional entertainers. You’ll enjoy Rock & Roll, Celtic, Jazz, Big Band, Alternative, HipHop, Folk, Children’s, and more. A number of performers have already been confirmed!
More than 100 craft and food booths will line the street offering unique one-of-a-kind items from jewellery to puppets, great textiles, home furnishings, and much more.
The Markham Farmers’ Market will be open all day on Robinson Street for you to stock up on fresh vegetables, fruit, meat and baking. Start with breakfast, stay all day!
The east end of Robinson Street will be dedicated to skateboarding events. Check out www.dbsskates.com for more information.

Relay for Life:
There is no finish line until we find a cure...
The 2007 Relay For Life is to be held at the Markham Museum on June 22 from 7:00pm through to 7:00am on June 23, 2007. Relay For Life is an overnight, non-competitive relay that honours and celebrates cancer survivors and has become the signature fundraising event of the Canadian Cancer Society. More information and even a short video that will give you a feel for the event is available online.
Last summer, communities across Canada united in the fight against cancer for a night of fun, friendship and fundraising with incredible results. With the support of the community who fielded 50 plus teams and local businesses the 2006 Markham Relay for Life event raised $151,537 This success could not have been achieved without the support of the people in our Markham community. In 2007 Relay For Life our target goal is 60 teams or about 600 participants. Our fundraising goal is $178,000 The festivities include:
THE SURVIVOR VICTORY LAP
Cancer survivors are invited to walk the first lap of the Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life to acknowledge and celebrate their courage in their struggle with the disease. The Survivors’ Victory Lap gives survivors an opportunity to:
share and celebrate success in their battle against cancer
give hope to people living with cancer and their families
thank everyone who helped them through their battle
THE LUMINARY CEREMONY
Luminaries are candles that are placed in special bags that bear the names of cancer survivors and loved ones who have lost their battle with cancer. After being lit in a moving ceremony at dusk, luminaries provide light and inspiration for participants as they walk around the track.
Experience the emotion of Relay For Life. Participate in the Luminary Ceremony by lighting a candle to honour a cancer survivor or someone who has lost their battle with cancer.
PARTICIPATING IN THE EVENT
Relay For Life is all about teams – we can’t make cancer history without you, your neighbours, your colleagues and your loved ones. Gather your team of 10 people to take turns walking, running or strolling around the track and help make cancer history.
Ways to participate as a team member
Join a team
If someone you know has already signed up as a team captain, you can join his or her team. If not, consider starting your own team.
Start a new team
Register as a team captain and invite your friends and family, co-workers or neighbours to join your team. When you register online, you can also automatically invite others to join your team by e-mail.
Giving one day to the fight against cancer could add years to the lives of others.
