Garden Festival a resounding success!

3rd Annual Garden Festival activities and attractions at Cornell's Business District on Bur Oak Avenue on June 23, 2007.
June 24, 2007 – The 3rd Annual Garden Festival reached new heights this year, from rock climbing and walking on stilts to the great number of guests that turned out! Back in 2005, the inaugural Garden Festival with ten exhibitors was a little celebration in a miniature parkette for adopting one of Markham's parks. The following year, the event spilled onto the street and grew to 30+ booths and an art exhibit. For the 3rd Annual this past weekend, the event moved to Bur Oak Avenue to encompass the ever-expanding Cornell (Markham) business district with 60+ booths and attractions!
A beautiful day for watching dog shows, listening to live jazz and rock music, sitting in on a puppet show, and shopping at a range of booths for rustic gardening enhancements, colourful fashion 'it' bags, jewellery, t-shirts, and children's furniture! The Festival Debut were the hand-made gazebo weights (so that water doesn't pool in your canopy) by justMOMsense – what a great idea! Home Depot returned with a great display of services and products, the Rhenish Lutheran Church of Canada splashed the street with orange, and the aroma of chicken wraps by Shoeless Joe's got everyone hungry. Best of all, who could resist climbing 'Cornell Everest'?

The Home Depot (bottom left) had a quality display of backyard ideas and summer services.
Many thanks to each of the Sponsors – SayItCornell.com, Cornell Insurance, fotografs.ca,

Shane Dewling,
Sheri Gammon Dewling,

And to the tireless Garden Festival Committee that devoted nine months of time to this non-profit event – Jeannie Daniels-Burry, Sheri Gammon Dewling, Gordon Parr, Sheila Wilson, and Fiona Wu. A focus for growth pushed marketing further than ever before: invitations to 3000+ homes, banners, posters, ads in the Markham Economist & Sun and her sister affiliates, a profile in Ming Pao Toronto, online with various prominent Event sites, and SNAP Markham made an appearance to capture the event for its future release.
Every effort and dollar spent was very worthwhile. The Garden Festival Committee, after a rest, looks forward to planning the 4th Annual soon!

3rd Annual Garden Festival – Garden BUZZ...

The Invitation
Location: Bur Oak Avenue / Morning Dove Drive (south of 16th Avenue)
Date: Saturday, June 23rd, 2007
Time: 10am – 4pm, Set-up is at 9am
Opening Ceremonies: Regional Councillor Jack Heath,
Ward 5 Councillor John Webster, and
The Town Crier at 11:30am
Through this planning process, we have uncovered a heightened interest for 'green' lifestyle choices and options! We suspect that Al Gore and David Suzuki have finally gotten our attention and we want to do what we can, in our homes and in our yards. The Garden Festival Committee is proud to have developed this event to not only bring you ideas for beautifying your space, but how to save money and conserve as well. What better community to hold the event than the New Urbanism community of Cornell!
Don't miss this incredible event in Cornell! Music, activities, fun, and learning all rolled into one amazing day! See you there!
The Garden Festival Committee is proudly made up by Jeannie Daniels-Burry, Sheri Gammon Dewling, Gordon Parr, Sheila Wilson, and Fiona Wu. We are seeking volunteers to help out on the day of the event. If you are interested, please call Sheila at 905.471.4476. |
