* The Garden Festival Committee in 2006 consisted of SayItCornell.com, volunteer members of the CRPA Board, a member of The Condo Board, active residents of Cornell (ARC), and friends from the GTA – all working together to plan, execute, and operate Cornell's first street celebration, the 2nd Annual Garden Festival.
The Pergola Project was conceived in 2006 but due to time and budget constraints, the project was postponed. The 2007 Garden Festival Committee will continue with this project to its unveiling during the 3rd Annual Garden Festival.

About Garden Festival Committee's Pergola Project

During summer 2006, the Garden Festival Committee* (GFC), chaired by Sheila Wilson and co-chaired by Jeannie Daniels-Burry, put forth a proposal to the Town of Markham to embark on a pilot project – to design and build a Pergola with Team Depot for Cornell's "The Mews Garden". With the Town's approval and support, the GFC has proceeded to raise funds for the project, to prepare for its official unveiling during the 3rd Annual Garden Festival in June 2007. Garden Festival, a street celebration in the theme of garden, has proven to be a most successful business networking event in just two years, drawing in crowds of 1500 from Cornell, Markham, and surrounding areas. We invite you to become a part of it, a part of our project. This will become a highly visible landmark in Cornell, Markham.

THE DESIGN DIRECTION

Design direction for The Mews Garden's Pergola Initiative
A pergola, seen above, is a gazebo-like garden structure.

The GFC has retained the services of Mike Dartizio, OALA, CSLA, Senior Landscape Architect of Stantec Consulting Ltd. to design the Pergola that will be constructed at The Mews Garden. Mr. Dartizio, referred to the GFC by Markham's Linda Irvine, is donating an astounding $1000 in services to this project and will be taking the design direction from the image above.

PLANNING AHEAD

To be located on the north-east corner of The Mews Park at Country Glen Road and Cornell Park Avenue (see map), the Pergola will provide shade and become an interesting focal point to the current greenspace, close to the playground's swings. The GFC and its Festival volunteers will also be planting in this area to enhance the corner further, but financial contributions are needed to realize these plans.

To date, the preliminary costs for the Pergola are an estimated $15,000. Approximately $5,000 will be needed by January to secure the engineering plans and approval stamp of the drawings alone. After that, it is only estimated that $10,000 will be required in materials and labour to complete the construction (see further below for volunteer positions). The GFC is pursuing sponsorships of $500, $1000, and $2000 (but we'll take more!) to finance this huge undertaking! If you would like to participate in this venture, please email us at GardenFestival@sayitcornell.com and a member of the GFC will drop off a marketing package to you. As a token of appreciation, your company or family name will be incorporated into the design of the Pergola. Don't miss out on this unique occasion to be etched permanently into Cornell's history!

Team Depot in Cornell

September 20, 2006 – Did you see them today? Did you see a whole bunch of orange shirts in The Mews Park this morning? That was Team Depot.

Team Depot has been working alongside the Garden Festival Committee to complete their community hours for Home Depot's National Work Week. The Garden Festival Committee, whose side initiative for adopting The Mews Park is to organize a Fall and Spring clean-up, embraced this initiative since the Pergola project was postponed until Spring/Summer 2007. The Committee's chair acted as liasion between the Town of Markham and the Condo Board to ensure that all parameters were addressed and met prior to bringing the project to light today, right down to the type of mulch that would be required.

For four hours today, Team Depot turned tree beds and topped up mulch, picked up garbage, pulled weeds out of the Condo's interlocking, cleaned the Cornell Cafe's fencing (with limited success) and in the weeks leading up to today's event, they designed and built flower boxes to dress up the Condo's property facing the park. This spring, the seven boxes will have a beautiful display of tulips as well as a variety of other flowers. Should be quite beautiful. Thanks to Eva and Gary Rivington on Cornell Park Avenue for lending us a few tools we were missing to complete all of the tasks this morning. Also, thank you to Bob Walters and Linda Irvine for giving us direction and support, Pizza Pizza for sponsoring lunch to the team, but mostly, thank you Team Depot!

An album will be compiled shortly for this event. In the meantime, check the freshened park out!
