Children's Book Reviews: Flush

Flush | Carl Hiaasen
Siobhan's Book Rating (out of 5): 2 stars

Flush by Carl Hiaasen

April 2008 – Are you a sucker for the environment? If you are, you will enjoy this book because it is about a family that tries to stop the ocean from becoming polluted. Flush by Carl Hiaasen, an award-winning author (Hoot, 2004), is an adventure that you will dive into.

Imagine a father who finds himself in jail for different charges time and time again... and then read about how his two children, Abbey and Noah, do everything in their power to prove his innocence! That is a must, right, as part of the plot? Wait a second, why am I asking you? I already know the ending!

Back on track... Dusty Muleman owns a vessel, the Coral Queen, and dumps his toilet paper, poop, and urine into the water. Ewwwww, right? Unfortunately, the turtles and other sea life are beginning to die and nobody wants to swim in it anymore! GROSS!

He said, "Noah, it's not like I robbed a bank or something!"

"I know, Dad."

"Did you go see what I did?"

"Not yet," I said.

He gave me a wink. "It's impressive."

"Yeah, I bet."

He was in a surprisingly good mood. I'd never been to a jail before, though honestly it wasn't much of a jail. Two holding cells, my dad told me. The main county lockup was miles away in Key West.

"Mom wants to know if she should call the lawyer," I said.

"I suppose."

"The same one from last time? She wasn't sure."

"Yeah, he's all right," my father said.

His clothes were rumpled and he looked tired, but he said the food was decent and the police were treating him fine.

"Dad, what if you just said you're sorry and offered to pay for what you did?"

"But I'm not sorry for what I did, Noah. The only thing I'm sorry about is that you've got to see me locked up like an ax murderer."

I know that there are some of you that will want to read Flush. I mean, who can resist a book cover with a toilet seat on it? It certainly got MY attention!
