Once Upon A Curse | E.D. Baker
Siobhan's Book Rating (out of 5): 5 stars

Once Upon A Curse by E.D. Baker

August 2007 – In this series by E.D. Baker, there are four books: The Frog Princess, Dragon's Breath, Once Upon A Curse, and No Place For Magic. This Review is for the third installment, Once Upon A Curse, an everlasting fairytale and my favourite so far!

In The Frog Princess we learn of the family curse – if a girl over the age of sixteen touches a flower, she will turn ugly and unkind until they receive a kiss of true love. In Dragon's Breath, Aunt Grassina meets her fate and the worst happens.

Emma's sixteenth birthday is growing near and she wants to find a cure from the fairy who had cast the curse long ago. She goes back in time, over 100 years ago, and arrives at ancestor Hazel's sixteenth birthday. There were a lot of creatures at the party: faries, relatives, and guests of every kind. And then, even though they took great care, the Swamp Fairy was insulted. She became angry and cast her curse:

For being rude to fairy-kind,
There is a price to pay, you'll find.
From those who could not be polite,
We do not soon forget a slight.

If, after your fifteenth year,
You should touch a flower, dear,
All your prettiness shall fade
Leaving you an ugly maid.

Your beauty gone, your sweetness too,
No one will want to be with you.
A nasty spirit, ugly face,
You won't be welcome any place.

Daughters of your family, too,
Will become nasty just like you.
If after the fated hour,
They should touch a single flower.

This curse shall last until the day
A true love's kiss can help convey
That he looks past her nasty ways
To see her true self in her gaze.

This book I now love to the moon and back – it is out-of-this-world-fantastic! Also read Siobhan's Review for The Frog Princess and Dragon's Breath >>
