April 2007 – And now,... what you have all been waiting for (drum roll), The Higher Power of Lucky by Susan Patron.
Lucky is a 10-yr-old pretty orphan who lives in the desert with her guardian Brigitte. Lincoln is an artist, but not any artist – he creates knots! Lincoln is Lucky's best friend.
The story starts out in a dusty sandstorm and the wind picks up higher and higher. Lucky wants to find her higher power but continues to hit rock bottom. The higher power, like the title, is being in a bad situation and then finally getting out. For example, Lincoln's Grandma smoked a cigarette after her doctor told her to never puff again – she choked on her smoke and nearly died. She REALLY never smoked after that again! You see, Lucky finds a passport in Brigitte's bag which she thought could only mean one thing – Brigitte is moving back to France! Will Lucky's higher power come to the rescue in time? or will Lucky pack her own bags and run away? You know I am not just going to tell you...
I liked the words in this book, all the detail too, but it took me a lot longer to read it than all the others before. I can't imagine running away or even thinking about it so it was hard to understand what Lucky was going through. Plus my mom made me read it, "This book won a big award. It would be good for you to read it, " she kept saying, which made it worse! I get to pick the next one!
