March 2008 – Why do we always have a shortage of space for our clothing and personal items? Could it be that we both have too much stuff and need more efficient storage ideas? This article offers some ideas to solve these problems with ‘clothing and accessory overload”.
Let’s face it – if we have 5 different sizes of clothes in our space, we need to purge. If you can’t bring yourself to sell or donate excess clothing, make sure you remove it from your main storage areas and use bins or vacuum bags to store them in a more remote area of your home. Once you find you haven’t worn them in another year – the time has come to take control and purge.
The market place offers a variety of solutions for all budgets. Once your minimized needs have been determined, draw a plan of how your space could best be utilized, then, visit some storage supply stores to see what your options are. Sometimes the best solutions are combinations of products to both fit your budget and your space.
Bins are a great way to keep shoes and purses organized and protected from dust. Either clear bins or labeled bins further enhance your ability to identify the item you are seeking.
Cloth jewelry storage bags with clear pockets offer the most practical storage and retrieval system for this critical accessory.
Take advantage of one of the many options to keep your ties organized. If you don’t have a formal organizer, simply hang them over one of the covered hangers you get from the dry cleaners so they don’t slide and do provide easy selection.
This hint helps keep smaller items in the drawer separate. They are sold at various organizing locations, including IKEA – or, if your drawers are deep enough, keep some of those shoe boxes from your shoe purchases and reuse them for this purpose!
Lastly – if your closet door is a hindrance and you don’t find it necessary – remove it. Keep it in the rafters in your garage or another remote storage area in the event you need to hang it again; i.e. selling your home.
