Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Installing and maintaining detectors is important
FIND OUT MORE ABOUT CARBON MONOXIDE >>

December 20, 2006 – Recently, two families in Cornell had a near-tragic experience in their home due to Carbon Monoxide poisoning. It was a good reminder for us to check our detectors and we felt we should be responsible and share with you the importance of installing and maintaining Carbon Monoxide Detectors.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a tasteless, colourless and odourless poisonous gas often referred to as 'the silent killer'. It's produced when fuels such as natural gas, oil, wood, propane, and kerosene don't get enough air to burn up completely. Damaged or blocked venting, as well as inadequate airflow, can allow Carbon Monoxide to build up inside a home, cottage, camper, or tent.

Always make sure your fuel-burning appliances have an adequate air supply (proper venting) to prevent a CO hazard. Make maintenance of your fuel-burning appliances, equipment, and venting systems an absolute priority!

To learn more about CO, please visit the SafetyInfo.ca website. Also, the Town of Markham put out a Media Release to remind us all about installing/maintaining Carbon Monoxide detectors in our homes. Download their December 20 Media Release here.

The families, although now doing fine, are a bit shaken after the near-tragedy.
