Overcome Linen Closet Limitations

March 2007 – If your linen closet is like mine, it’s too small to hold all bedroom linens and bathroom towels. When an area is too small to keep organized, it remains a constant mess as you continually riffle through the contents to find a fresh towel or a clean sheet set. Here are some solutions for Markham homes:

Limit your linens
Any more than three sets of sheets per bed is a waste. One set in use, one set in the laundry and one spare set is sufficient for each bed. The same logic applies to towels, with two exceptions:

Keep three or four old towels stored in a more remote storage area for use for unexpected spills or leaks; and
Keep two complete sets of bath, hand and face towels handy for guests.

Hint: Extra towels and sheet sets may be utilized through donation to a worthy facility such as a clothing bank or a shelter, OR, make some extra money at your spring garage sale – one person’s cast off is another’s treasure.

‘Sensicle’ sheet sets
Take advantage of under-bed space by storing sheet sets for each bed in an under-bed storage box. They are available with or without wheels. Ensure you measure the space from floor to bed frame prior to selecting the appropriate box and watch out for bed centre supports.

Hint: Instead of the traditional method of piling pillow cases, flat sheets and fitted sheets in separate piles, why not store each individual complete set together – wrapped in the folded, fitted sheet for easy access at bed changing time.

Managing Linen Space by Sheri Gammon Dewlingbullet Face cloth or fantastic room feature
Store everyday towels in or near the bathroom where they will be used. If your bathroom cupboard space is insufficient, make towels part of the room decoration. Use a wall shelf or a basket on the floor to showcase the towels and the location will offer the added benefit of easy access.

Hint: When displaying towels, roll them instead of folding and piling them. The rolled appearance can be more visually appealing, plus easier to manage without disturbing the rest of the display.

Once you have utilized hints one through three, you will find ample space in your linen closet for extra blankets, pillows and room for all guest towels and sheets. The bonus is your linen closet will remain so neat and organized you won’t even be embarrassed to send guests to your linen closet for those supplies.

Sometimes it’s the little things that make us smile!!
