Markham residents wore pink for a good cause

Markham residents supporting Anti-bullying campaign Wear Pink
Young Markham residents wear pink to support the anti-bullying campaign.

February 28, 2008 – Bullies harassed a boy, calling him a homosexual for wearing pink the first day of school. In the Fall of 2007, a Grade 9 boy at Central Kings Rural High School in Cambridge, Nova Scotia wore a pink shirt to school and was bullied, threatened, and assaulted with false homophobic epithets. Travis Price and David Shepherd, two Grade 12 students at the same school, heard about it and took action. They wore pink to school the next day and challenged 400+ other schoolmates to join them in showing support for the victim of bullying. This original story swept across North America and even made its way to Europe – it was about taking a stand against bullying >>

On February 27th, residents of the community of Markham
demonstrated a zero tolerance for bullying

Local Cornell (Markham) resident Valerie Blais drew our attention to the Wear Pink campaign on Facebook, spearheaded by Christy Clark (Vancouver, BC) who was directly inspired by the Nova Scotia students. We agree with Christy – bullying is a major problem in every community, our schools, at home, workplaces, and over the internet too. Not all of us are bullies or have been bullied, but each of us know of at least one person who has been – we are all affected.

Thousands of Canadians wore pink to support this anti-bullying campaign on Wednesday, February 27th and to demonstrate a zero tolerance for bullying everywhere.

Family Day, Yeah or Nay?
READ MORE FROM JOHN WEBSTER'S WEBSITE >>

February 18, 2008 – The Town of Markham is recognizing and implementing the new public holiday of "Family Day" for the third Monday of each February.

The Ontario Government has introduced a new "Family Day" public holiday on the third Monday in February. The additional holiday, whish has now been prescribed as a public holiday under the Employment Standards Act, 2000, increases the number of public holidays in Ontario to nine.

Employers do not need to honour Family Day if they provide more than nine holidays pursuant to a collective agreement or employment contract. Read more from Councillor John Webster's website >>

Book Review: Hoot by Carl Hiaasen

Hoot by Carl Hiaasen

March 2008 – For those who love to laugh, this is the book to go for: Hoot by Carl Hiaasen. A story that can be enjoyed by both boys and girls, it has also won the Newberry Award. It's loaded with comedy and a little different from my previous book choices.

Roy Eberhardt lives in Florida. One day, while being smashed into the school bus window by a bully, Roy spots a running boy – only the boy was running away from the bus. He had no books, no backpack, and no shoes. Roy sets himself on the boy's trail where he experiences some strange things including alligators in portable potties, vicious hound dogs, and several poisonous snakes with unnaturally sparkling tails! And what about that fake-fart champion?! Read More >>

Reading Game
A SayItCornell.com Original

2007 – Initially drawn out by hand, we developed riddles and a chant to enhance the Reading Game. We did phonetics, word families, holiday pieces, and we distributed them passionately to everyone we could – even our daughter's entire Kindergarten class (a lot of work!). The feedback was positive and even the teacher had asked for one, supporting the idea that this game was meant for sharing. Now digitally-designed, Reading Game is available for download at SayItCornell.com so that you can try the game yourself with your child(ren):

Local ‘EnviroMom’ Sets Example for Sons

Monika Jazyk and sons

October 25, 2007 – We have all heard about Global Warming. If you haven’t seen Al Gore’s movie, An Inconvenient Truth, you have surely viewed a David Suzuki commercial or a political speech, emphasizing the time to act is now.

Markham (Cornell) resident, Monika Jazyk, heard the message and is determined to join the fight to preserve the environment for our children (left). “If we have time to correct the damage we have done to our environment, I want to be a part of the solution,” she says. Monika is driven to be an environmental role model for her young boys, emphasizing that “each person can and should make a difference.”

In her day-to-day life, Monika looks for ways to reduce her family’s environmental footprint. As a mother, teacher, and entrepreneur, Monika has a panoramic view of waste reduction opportunities. Her challenge is the hunt for solutions to daily waste and making these solutions available to other families. This journey drove Monika to create Enviromomonline.com, an e-commerce website designed to inform, educate and provide single source for consumers to purchase environmentally friendly products.

“When I have a product idea, I look for ‘euphoria’ in a solution. If the best solution is available in the market, I arrange to become a local distributor. If my idea for a solution hasn’t been created yet, I develop it myself,” says Monika. Monika describes herself as a philanthropic, type-A personality with a thirst for knowledge and drive to be a positive role model to her own children and those entrusted to her in the classroom.

When asked how her health and environmental focus impacts her as a teacher, Monika responds; “It is very difficult to watch children bring lunches to school in boxes containing lead, housing prepackaged foods with excessive wrapping.”

Enviromomonline.com offers a Laptop Lunch System that is lead-free and the containers are made of #5 plastic (polypropylene and polyethylene) that is FDA-approved for food use. The lunch systems include a bento box with individual reusable food compartments that eliminate the need for additional packaging, while providing a recipe book with simple and nutritious hints for snacks and meals.

“My kids love their Laptop Lunches. The open design of the bento box makes it easy to see what their options are and encourages me to be creative in offering varied choices as I pack their lunches. The containers are all dishwasher and microwave safe and come in a variety of attractive colours,” says Monika.

Environmental Lunch Boxes
Laptop Lunches come in a variety of different colours.

As a fast food society, we have come to enjoy the convenience of individually wrapped snacks that can be easily tossed into a lunch bag. We have learned the cost of this convenience is damage to our environment and a dent in our wallets, along with a dramatic increase in childhood obesity. Monika, and others like her, provide the tools to create nutritional meals from buying food products in bulk to reduce our grocery bill and eliminate waste caused by excessive packaging.

To join the fight for the environment alongside Monika, visit Enviromomonline.com and sign-up for the quarterly newsletter. This 6-page environmental guide is designed to share all the latest news on environmental solutions and distributed with a seasonal focus so you and your family can also reduce your environmental footprint while improving your overall health.
