Phonetics & fun from SayItCornell.com

November 10, 2006 – When our daughter started kindergarten in 2003 at Cornell Village Public School, one thing was certain. We wanted to keep her spirit alive as she learned entry level strategies for reading, writing, and counting. We read to her every day, counting upwards twelve stories per session! She loved it and we wanted to forward her level of interest even more.

Reading Game Phonetic & Fun with SayItCornell.comDuring that crucial school year, we tried to be as creative as possible at home to support the "Raising Readers" idea – we created the Reading Game! Initially drawn out by hand, we also developed riddles and a chant to enhance the game. We did phonetics, word families, and holiday pieces and we distributed them passionately to everyone we could, even our daughter's entire Kindergarten class (a lot of work!). The feedback was positive and even the teacher asked for one! This supported the idea that this game was meant for sharing. Now digitally-designed, Reading Game is available for download at SayItCornell.com so that you can try the game yourself with your child(ren).

So far, two games are available with "ack" and "at" words designed for beginning readers learning their word families (we will be uploading other themes shortly). A Step-by-step Instructions sheet for how to construct the game is also available – downloads are listed in the side menu – look for the cat! Then after some preliminary preparations in printing, trimming, and folding, you can sit down for some reading fun! Join us!

More to come in the next few days. Enjoy!

Thirst-For-Books Donates!

November 22, 2006 – Some of this summer's Thirst-For-Books fundraisers gathered this afternoon to take their donation to Ms. Worthington, school librarian and teacher at CVPS, who happily received their hard-earned contribution of $782.

Thirst-For-Books

Volunteers who collected the donations through the Thirst-For-Books lemonade stand at three events during the summer were Joanne Andrianopoulos, Maria, Mark, Emily and Eva Escandon, Siobhan and Sheila Wilson, Liam Mohan, Neil and Ella Kohlman, and Kayla Torrington. Justine's Fun Faces stepped up and joined Thirst-For-Books to raise $122 out of the total sum. Here's to happy reading at the CVPS Library!

Thirst-For-Books Wraps Up

September 19, 2006 – The children this summer did exceptionally well raising funds and awareness for the need of library books at CVPS. Independently, they were able to raise a total of $660 to this very worthy cause at three Cornell community events – the 2nd Annual Garden Festival, the 8th Annual Cornell Picnic, and Healthy Living Expo. Most of the funds were raised during Garden Festival.

To SayItCornell.com's delight, during CRPA's Cornell Picnic and Healthy Living Expo, Justine's Fun Faces stepped up and joined Thirst-For-Books. Thank you to Justine, Joe, and Ann from Justine's Fun Faces for working to contribute $122 to the library.

To the children and their supervisors for their much appreciated and charitable time this summer: Joanne Andrianopoulos, Maria, Mark, Emily and Eva Escandon, Siobhan and Sheila Wilson, Liam Mohan, Neil and Ella Kohlman, and Kayla Torrington. Of special mention, this summer Siobhan contributed 12 hours to the lemonade stand to support the library's needs. We didn't reach our $1,000 goal, but $782 is certainly a most fantastic donation! To the customers who purchased lemonade, t-shirts, and painted faces, THANK YOU!

A Little Bit About Thirst-For-Books

During Summer 2005 and driven by the need for library books at Cornell Village Public School (CVPS), Sheila Wilson and daughter Siobhan conceived the Thirst-For-Books fundraiser, giving it a name months after the effort began. It is an innovative campaign to raise awareness and funds for the library in a fun and enjoyable environment, to involve the community with a children's cause, and to inspire others. The fundraiser gathers volunteer students from any grade to sell lemonade in exchange for a donation to the cause. While observed and managed by adult volunteers, students learn a work ethic and how to handle money, and most importantly, they gain an understanding for charity.

The first thing we wanted to do was to develop a logo. With time constraints due to planning Cornell Garden Festival: Adopt-A-Park 2005, another willing designer was tapped for their creative input. After a few exchanges by email and a collaborative effort, the Thirst-For-Books logo was finalized in time for the inaugural Garden Festival. Today, the logo is one of the most recognized logos in the Cornell community appearing on t-shirts (worn by CVPS staff, students, and parents alike), cards, posters, banners, newspaper articles, and websites.

A successful fundraiser
Over the course of two years, Thirst-For-Books has been able to raise nearly $4,000 and collected 240 books during various events like the first Easter Egg Hunt, Cornell Garage Sale, Garden Festival, the Cornell Picnic, and Healthy Living Expo. The Honour Rolls for each year is posted on our Discussion Forum with a breakdown of each contribution and by whom. Joining in the effort for our last two Thirst-For-Books appearances, Justine's Fun Faces painted full faces to contribute to the cause.

Many, many thanks to our volunteer managers and participants over the years: Joanne Andrianopoulos, Mark and Maria Escandon, Elizabeth Gallant, Vivien Page, and Penny Green. Super and many thanks to our little volunteer friends for having worked so hard at the booth: Emily, Eva, Neil, Ella, Kayla, Victoria, Danielle, Justin, Ginny, Caroline, Emma T., Liam, and Siobhan. It takes the effort of many to achieve such great results!

Make your contribution
The school has many needs. Because of the support from Thirst-For-Books, Ms. Worthington (Teacher-Librarian at CVPS) waives a percentage of funds raised by the School Advisory Council. Your support is especially important now that the school population is over-extended. If you are inspired by this program and would like to make a contribution to the CVPS library through Thirst-For-Books, please email us at TFB@sayitcornell.com. We collect money and/or cheques (tax receipts are issued through the school by York Region District School Board), we collect books, and take orders for t-shirts. Please note that, aside from outstanding orders, t-shirts will resume next summer (2007).

Note: This is a non-profit program and entirely independent from the school. It relies on volunteers to contribute time to raise awareness and collect funds for new library books.
