The Markham Arts Council was formed in 2004, dedicated to enhancing the community by promoting and fostering the arts in all its forms in the Town of Markham. Originally formed in 1980, the Markham Arts Council had the prime objective of building a theatre and, working with the Town of Markham, the Markham Theatre for the Performing Arts came to be. Once this was accomplished, the Arts Council disbanded. There was another attempt to establish in 1996 but it was not sustained. In late 2003, the formation of the current Council was initiated by Ross Sutherland, who sings with the Suburbanaires and is a huge community advocate. A steering committee was formed by a small group of community arts people and the Arts Council was once again born.

The Markham Group of Artists was founded in 1981 by artist Pat Wheeler, so that fellow artists would have a place to meet and practice their craft in the community. Since then, the group has grown to well over one hundred enthusiastic members. The group includes artists from beginners to professionals, working in a variety of media from charcoal and pastels to watercolors and acrylics.

Instructed by well-known artists from around Ontario, MGA workshops include classes in still life, portraiture, life drawing, landscape painting, and abstract and experimental painting. Workshops are offered at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Members also exhibit their work at various venues, promote the arts in the community, and participate in the vibrant arts scene around Toronto.

The Markham Group of Artists (MGA) meets on Wednesdays during the daytime (10am to 3pm) from September to mid-May at the Milliken Mills Library.

Markham Guild of Village Crafts was founded in the spring of 1971. With thirty original members, the Guild has grown in size and has called numerous locations in the Town of Markham home before finally settling in its current location in the early 1980s.

The teachers are highly skilled in their area of crafting and many are award-winning in competitions across Ontario. Markham Guild is unique in that it is one of the few multi-media guilds in Ontario that is able to offer its members and the communities it serves a choice of craft learning opportunities. The goal is to preserve the crafting traditions of the past while exploring and creating new ones for the future.

Markham Guild of Village Crafts serves the community of Markham and surrounding areas with classes in a variety of craft disciplines. The Guild has participated by demonstrating crafts at community events such as the Markham Village Festival, Markham Fair, and the Farmers' Market, and Cornell Garden Festival, to name just a few.

In 2004, Markham Guild of Village Crafts became the proud recipient of a grant from The Ontario Trillium Foundation which enabled the Guild to purchase new equipment to enhance services to the community.
