Movie Review: Third Place for DreamWorks' Shrek

Riley Girls donate birthday presents to Markham Stouffville Hospital
www.shrek.com

May 23, 2007 – Upon our discovery that a third installment of Shrek was due in theatres for May, our excitement couldn't be contained. The first two Shrek movies have afforded us the rare occassion of going to the theatre, and thus by this tradition, it would be no different but to go again. The kids were dreaming popcorn and drinks for months – not that we never indulge ourselves with these treats but there's something about Popcorn Deals in the movie theatre that makes it so much better than turning on the microwave or opening the fridge at home!

Victoria Day weekend (Shrek's opening weekend), we purchased our tickets, allowed the kids to choose the seats (yes, far too close), and settled in for 93 minutes of entertainment. As expected, the animation was superb – better than ever – and promises of improved technology did not go unnoticed! The characters were great too: voices by Mike Myers (Shrek), Cameron Diaz (Fiona), Antonio Banderas (Puss), Eddie Murphy (Donkey), Julie Andrews (The Queen), and newcomer Justin Timberlake (Arty) were exceptionally well done but the story just ...wasn't ...and laughs from the packed audience were few.

Truthfully, there was no marriage between the storyline and characters, the animation, and the music, which make up the three main elements for a good (or dreadful) movie. In the case for The Third, it had definite weaknesses:
The scene with the dying king was painfully long, embarrassing enough to watch even (!), and his subsequent funeral – although beautifully animated – was wasteful and far too drawn out. As a parent with young children, I felt that a suggestion of the king's passing would have been sufficient and far more appropriate for this type of film
There were simply too many villains, but none that captured us as Puss did in Shrek II – although Puss was promoted from the antagonist role shortly after introduction. Still, the villains of The Third were numerable and continued unfolding their plot by invading scene after uneventful scene without engaging the audience into their character (aside from defining they were bad). Considering how much screen time they were awarded, more depth for at least one would have been more interesting
The princesses-turned-superheros, parodies from the Disney classics, were just annoying. Sleeping Beauty 'falling' asleep deserved a few small giggles the first two times... After that, all that I could manage were long and longer sighs for boredom and worn-out novelty that eventually evolved into serious irritation. The Princess Ensemble, particularly Snow White with accentuated teen-like language and mannerisms, was reminiscent of yesteryear's Spice Girls – ugh! Now that I am the 'older audience,' these stereotypes have become increasingly bothersome
Wait a minute! Exactly when was I fast-tracked to the senior crowd anyway? Do we instantly become 'too old' when we become parents? Living longer doesn't count anymore either – we're just old longer according to hollyland
Back on topic... finally, the movie's music was flat, not the spirited variety that had seen young children break into dance as in the movie's two predecessors. Need I say more? Sigh...

The children were disinterested before we reached the halfway point and after spending over $50 for this highly-anticipated family outing, we left in the end feeling grossly unfulfilled. Sure enough, good or bad, the movie will make its profits based on Shrek's strong and successful history. We too were part of that established Shrek fan base, sucked in by media to make another contribution to an already-rich film studio (regretfully so this time) – and they are about to become even richer. Get used to seeing Shrek in all forms of marketing / advertising and toys throughout the summer and onwards to the Winter Holidays but if you haven't already seen the movie, wait for the DVD.
