January 25, 2008 – Great news! The Mews Park and White's Hill Park Volunteer Ice Rinks are now open for free-skate and hockey in the community of Cornell! The recent cold snap and the hard work of local volunteers have made this all but possible for the season! Please note, skating hours are subject to ice/weather conditions.

Two Cornell Ice Rinks:
This year, there are two ice rinks in Cornell – The Mews Park and another at White's Hill Park (see map):

The Markham Skating Club skates primarily at the Markham Community Centre, 
located at Highway 7 and Highway 48. The Elite Edge Synchronized Skating Teams are a proud component of the Markham Skating Club. Each season, teams are formed dependant on the number of skaters and their skill levels.

Thornhill Skating Academy

Thornhill Skating Academy's Roy and Sue Bradshaw are two time British Champions, European Bronze medallists and three time World Competitors (4th place finish), who came to Canada in 1971. Arriving from Great Britain, they soon organized a competitive training centre. This program has produced many great athletes.

Angus Glen Community Centre

Two NHL-sized ice pads, area 85' x 200' long. 450 seating capacity.  Each rink has six dressing rooms with shower and washroom facilities, gondola, timekeeper boxes with music and PA capacities, and scoreboards. Ice availability: Ice season from September to May.

Centennial Community Centre

The arena has an NHL-sized ice surface with seating for 2300 spectators. It is home to the Markham Waxers Jr. A Hockey Club.

Crosby Memorial Community Centre

The arena ice surface is 79' x 185'. Crosby is home to the Unionville Figure Skating Club and Unionville Minor Hockey Association.

Milliken Mills Community Centre

The arena has two ice pads, each 85' x 200'. The west surface has seating for 1000 and the east has 300. It is home to Markham Islanders, Thornhill Community Hockey League, and the Thornhill Figure Skating Club.

• Note: Family Rate includes a maximum of 6 people, no more than 2 adults
and children must be 15 years of age or younger

Natural Ice Rinks (outdoor)

All Town-managed* skating facilities are dependent on the ice and weather conditions, and are monitored daily by parks staff. A minimum of 19mm or 7 1/2 inches of solid ice with no surface water, or melting edges are required to open the ponds for safe public skating. Please note, all locations use a flag system to inform the public of ice conditions:
Skating hours are subject to ice/weather conditions
RED flag means skating is not permitted and there is no skate patrol on duty.
YELLOW flag means ice is sufficient for skating – you may proceed with caution.
Skate at own risk

Cedarena is located at 7373 Reesor Road, in Cedargrove just north of Steeles. This is a 75-year-old outdoor rink in the Rouge Valley is surrounded by trees, is equipped with an old clubhouse for changing into your skates. Hot chocolate and locally-made hot apple cider is served. Skating available in appropriate weather conditions. Phone line is open from Dec.1 to March 31 at 905.294.0038. Charge for admission.

Markham Civic Centre* is located at 101 Town Centre Boulevard, on the north-west corner of Highway 7 and Warden Avenue.

Markham Museum is located on the west side of Highway 48, just north of 16th Avenue.

Mount Joy Lake* is located on the north side of 16th Avenue, east of Highway 48, beside the Brother Andre Catholic High School.

Too Good Pond* is located in Unionville at Carlton Road on the west side of Main Street Unionville.

 
     
     


Volunteer-based Ice Rinks, 2007-08

The Cornell Mews Park is located on Cornell Park Avenue at Country Glen Road in the community of Cornell in Markham. Convenience store and coffee is nearby.

Markham Museum is located in Markham on the west side of Highway 48, just north of Tim Hortons on 16th Avenue.

Places to Skate This Winter in Markham

February 13, 2007 – We have covered this a few times before, but again, before winter is out, there may be just some of you who haven't gone out to do some skating (if it is indeed a winter sport you engage in). What do you prefer, indoor skating or out in a natural setting? In Markham, there is so much to choose from to embrace a true Canadian winter and there's only just weeks left! Take this page and enjoy what it has to offer!

With temperatures now dipping well below freezing, we advise that you pay attention to weather advisories especially for outdoor skating.

Cornell's Ice Rinks are now open

January 28, 2007 – The Mews Ice Rinks, spearheaded by Richard Blais and a group of hardworking volunteers, are now open to the neighbourhood. This is an unsupervised Skating Rink, maintained by volunteers. The Town of Markham strongly recommends the use of approved helmets and protective equipment for ice activities.

Please consider stopping in at 'The Cornell Stop' for a coffee or hot chocolate to keep warm during your winter activities at The Mews! Happy skating, everyone! Living it. Loving it. Cornell!
